I'm trying to put together a podcast
of listener memories and stories about John Peel. The podcast will be a mixture
of listener memories and new independent music which John would be championing
if he were still with us.
Were you a listener
and fan of his programmes.
Do you have any memories about a specific time that you were listening?
Did John change your musical taste?
Did something significant happen to your life as a result of listening to him.
What are your memories, happy, sad, embarrassing or nostalgic.
If so, and you can record an audio mp3 of yourself, and please send it to nic@storyville.f9.co.uk
I am planning the podcast to coincide
with the anniversary of his death toward the end of October. So please send
your contribution by October 21st at the latest.
Your assistance in this is greatly
appreciated. If you do not have the ability to record your story and you can
submit a written account please do so and I will consider it for inclusion.
The podcast will be taking a holiday break this week. We will return
next week with a bumper bag of fare before our jaunt to Scotland for 10
days, when the show will take another weeks break. Sorry for the break
in service.
War!! In this weeks special edition programme Homegrown declares War on all that is wrong in the world, including old people in the supermarket on weekends!
Nevermind here’s another packed podcast full of indie goodness from the accoustic sweetness of Martin Ward, the scrupilous and hilarious
editing of Cassette Boy, the African beats of Ashley Maher and wonderful poetry of Don McIver.
This week myself and Mrs Nic hotfooted it down Oxford way to bask in the sunshine and sup a frozen margarita or two, while listening to the likes of Suzanne Vega, The Proclaimers, The Waterboys, David Gray and The Feeling at the highly civilised Cornbury Music Festival. Not a piece of mud for miles. But what of the little up coming indie type artists on the smaller stages I hear you
cry? Well, sit back and have a listen as I walk you through some of the sights and sounds of what was a truly scorching weekend of music.

Homegrown will be featuring more work from the
Birmingham Conservatoirein forthcoming programmes.
This weeks programme features a great mix from the rock/pop of Swedish Roenik to the foot-tapping Mali troupe Tinariwen, the 60's inspired folk of The Story, beautiful celtic harp of Hermione Swinford and the down right Ye-ha country music of Asleep At The Wheel. Enjoy.
As I am deep in polyfiller, paint and plaster, decorating the house, I
present a Low Maintenance Edition of Homegrown. All of this weeks artists have featured in this years SXWS Festival in Austin
Texas, which has been running from 9-18th March 2007
Poetry: Tony Morris - Health Warning, Slow
Dancer, Road Rage
Homegrown may be a bit sporadic and Lo Maintenance over the next couple of
weeks due to other commitments but will be putting out something, however small. Stay subscribed via ITUNES and keep sending your music and spoken word material.
This programme is a compilation of my audio blogs from 24th Feb till 5th
March 2007 while I have been participating in the Slam Idol Open Writing Challenge. The premise
of the competition is to get 6 poets to create an original poem over 10 days, while
audio blogging their creative process and progress.
You can find out more about the competition by following the link below to the
Slam Idol website and listening to the other competitors. I had a great deal of fun and a little
frustration in creating my poem, which took up quite a bit of time. Hence no typical Homegrown this
week. But I hope you enjoy this all poetry programme and insight into my own creative process.
There will soon be a voting process on Slam Idol to find listeners favourite
poem.
This week I hosted AMPed, the weekly podcast from the Association of Music
Podcasting, which features some of the best independent music being played by podcasters
both in the UK, the States and beyond.
I thought I'd present the podcast here for your consideration, slightly
revised with a break for some spoken word material half way through. More information on AMP can be found at www.musicpodcasting.org
Special studio guest Giovanni
Esposito aka
Spoz the 11th Birmingham Poet Laureate ‘Spoz' being the bit between the
‘E' and the ‘ito' (kind of). Spoz describes himself as a sort of poet. The sort,
in fact, that has been published, recorded, been on the radio, won awards, is a
member of the renowned ‘New October Poets', taken part in so many festivals,
he's lost count and even had a commission from the BBC. The sort of poet that
isn't quite everybody's cup of tea, though, could be yours. He's a singer, songwriter, playwright and
musical writer. He has produced and directed self penned musicals in Birmingham
and Edinburgh. He's written and recorded albums with several bands as well as a
solo artiste and appeared before the Queen mum (RIP). In this interview I talk to Spoz about his many achievements
including the Birmingham Poet Laureateship, his work with bringing poetry to children, and his self written "karaoke" musicals.
Spoz also performs the poems : Vodka Catalyst, Identity Poem, Dying
For A Dump In The Car On The Way Back From Cheltenham, Disco Dad and I Met Jesus At St Andrews Football Stadium
You can aslo check out Spoz's
Myspace
site which has examples of his work.
If you are an artist who is local to Birmingham and would like to record a
session or interview please contact me
here.

Special Guest Songwriter Aaron
Yorke Aaron is a deeply gifted songwriter who wears his heart on his sleeve.
Very influenced by artists like David Gray and Tom Baxter, his latest album "Taking The Time To Heal" is a mature collection of songs about the human condition. Aaron has the rare ability to share the intimate moments of his life with his audience, through this sharing experience he leads you through some difficult soul searching songs. The process is a rewarding experience for the listener as you come away with a feeling of kinship, that here is
someone here who can put into words what you are feeling, who can express a certain moment in your life through his music. In our conversation at the Midlands Arts Centre on the occasion of his album release, we talk about songwriting, promotion, autism and home recording. Plus fromgig Aaron performs When A Relationship Endsand Have You
Felt Beautiful Lately. Aaron also has amyspace page.
This weeks
podcast is given over entirely to my special guest Paul Murphy, a singer and songwriter who
has been writing and performing over the past four decades. He was born in Belfast and came to England in 1966 as a 16
year-old-with just a guitar and a handful of songs.
From the beginning he was determined to write songs that had integrity and
drew on real experience. During those formative early years on the road he hung
out with the likes of Lemmy from Motorhead and Van Morrison.
Paul has called Birmingham
home for over 30 years and has been a vocal supporter of songwriting and live
music in his adopted city. In 1996 he established SongwritersCafe, which for
several years provided a valuable showcase for up and coming artists as well as
featuring turns from more established acts such as Ocean Colour Scene who
invited Paul to support them on an Irish tour.
Until recently Paul has focused almost exclusively on live, intimate performances
that allow for his huge capacity for spontaneity. 'On the spot' songs have long
been a hallmark of his gigs. So also is spoken word, poetry or talking blues.
He says: "The thing with live performance is that like theatre it's in the
moment, unique, unchangeable and for a procrastinator like me that is huge
liberation."
In this interview Paul talks about his full and varied career in music, from
his beginnings in Ireland, coming to England in 66, performing at the Marquee
Club, developing his songwriting / poetry skills, setting up the now famous
Songwriters Cafe in Birmingham to his present live work, including raucous
guest slots with gypsy and klezmer influenced 14 piece band The Destroyers. Paul
has recently been working on recording four decades worth of original songs. Here
he performs new songs College
Square & Hometown, as well as spoken pieces Shoplifters
Talking Blues & Dark Road.
Another excellent batch of songs and poetry. From the intimate evocative nay mystical sounds of Marissa Nadler to the world beats of Alain Nkossi Konda and the positive vibes of poetry from Celestial Dancer. All this plus one of my teenage musical heros Howard Jones who has just made a song available on the podsafe music network...
I've been a little preoccupied with re-building my Storyville website this week
and haven't had chance to prepare the podcast. In its place is a revised edition
of the AMPed podcast I presented earlier this month. There is a break half way
for poetry. Hope you enjoy it. And don't forget to visit either
www.musicpodcasting.org or

For this edition of Homegrown I have decided to dust off a few of my more mature
songs and poems, which have not seen the light of day for some time. All these
performances were recorded at Home, and in some cases took more than one take to
get down. I think these works serve as a good introduction to my writing and my
character. I had a lot of fun recording them and I hope they inspire some kind of
reaction now that they are out in the electronic wires. The links below will
take you to the song lyrics and poems at my own site. Next week we will be back
to our regular eclectic mix of independent music and poetry from around the web.

Ideas
for the programme I'm kicking around a couple of ideas relating to
specifically focussing on the process of creating / writing music or
poetry. I'm looking at maybe producing an occasional special Homegrown
Song Circle whereby we focus on 2 or three artists performing a couple
of stripped down versions of songs. The other idea is for a small weekly
spotlight on songwriting/music creation with an artist explaining a
little about how a piece came to be. Both of these ideas need your
contributions to work. If you an artist who has sent stuff into me or
planning to send stuff and you have the ability to either record a short
audio file about the writing process or drop down an explination in an
e-mail then please do. Equally if you have acoustic versions of songs
please send those. I will see what the response it like and keep you
posted.
