Special Guest Songwriter Aaron
Yorke Aaron is a deeply gifted songwriter who wears his heart on his sleeve.
Very influenced by artists like David Gray and Tom Baxter, his latest album "Taking The Time To Heal" is a mature collection of songs about the human condition. Aaron has the rare ability to share the intimate moments of his life with his audience, through this sharing experience he leads you through some difficult soul searching songs. The process is a rewarding experience for the listener as you come away with a feeling of kinship, that here is
someone here who can put into words what you are feeling, who can express a certain moment in your life through his music. In our conversation at the Midlands Arts Centre on the occasion of his album release, we talk about songwriting, promotion, autism and home recording. Plus fromgig Aaron performs When A Relationship Endsand Have You
Felt Beautiful Lately. Aaron also has amyspace page.
This weeks
podcast is given over entirely to my special guest Paul Murphy, a singer and songwriter who
has been writing and performing over the past four decades. He was born in Belfast and came to England in 1966 as a 16
year-old-with just a guitar and a handful of songs.
From the beginning he was determined to write songs that had integrity and
drew on real experience. During those formative early years on the road he hung
out with the likes of Lemmy from Motorhead and Van Morrison.
Paul has called Birmingham
home for over 30 years and has been a vocal supporter of songwriting and live
music in his adopted city. In 1996 he established SongwritersCafe, which for
several years provided a valuable showcase for up and coming artists as well as
featuring turns from more established acts such as Ocean Colour Scene who
invited Paul to support them on an Irish tour.
Until recently Paul has focused almost exclusively on live, intimate performances
that allow for his huge capacity for spontaneity. 'On the spot' songs have long
been a hallmark of his gigs. So also is spoken word, poetry or talking blues.
He says: "The thing with live performance is that like theatre it's in the
moment, unique, unchangeable and for a procrastinator like me that is huge
liberation."
In this interview Paul talks about his full and varied career in music, from
his beginnings in Ireland, coming to England in 66, performing at the Marquee
Club, developing his songwriting / poetry skills, setting up the now famous
Songwriters Cafe in Birmingham to his present live work, including raucous
guest slots with gypsy and klezmer influenced 14 piece band The Destroyers. Paul
has recently been working on recording four decades worth of original songs. Here
he performs new songs College
Square & Hometown, as well as spoken pieces Shoplifters
Talking Blues & Dark Road.
Another excellent batch of songs and poetry. From the intimate evocative nay mystical sounds of Marissa Nadler to the world beats of Alain Nkossi Konda and the positive vibes of poetry from Celestial Dancer. All this plus one of my teenage musical heros Howard Jones who has just made a song available on the podsafe music network...

For this edition of Homegrown I have decided to dust off a few of my more mature
songs and poems, which have not seen the light of day for some time. All these
performances were recorded at Home, and in some cases took more than one take to
get down. I think these works serve as a good introduction to my writing and my
character. I had a lot of fun recording them and I hope they inspire some kind of
reaction now that they are out in the electronic wires. The links below will
take you to the song lyrics and poems at my own site. Next week we will be back
to our regular eclectic mix of independent music and poetry from around the web.

Please vote for my poem PG in the current competition of
Slam Idol
Ideas
for the programme I'm kicking around a couple of ideas relating to
specifically focussing on the process of creating / writing music or
poetry. I'm looking at maybe producing an occasional special Homegrown
Song Circle whereby we focus on 2 or three artists performing a couple
of stripped down versions of songs. The other idea is for a small weekly
spotlight on songwriting/music creation with an artist explaining a
little about how a piece came to be. Both of these ideas need your
contributions to work. If you an artist who has sent stuff into me or
planning to send stuff and you have the ability to either record a short
audio file about the writing process or drop down an explination in an
e-mail then please do. Equally if you have acoustic versions of songs
please send those. I will see what the response it like and keep you
posted.
Yours truely, a man many are now describing as "the one who plays the weird stuff" has just been featured on the one and only Slam Idol Podcast reading my poetry homage to Phillip Glass "PG" I'm apparently contestant no. 4 in contest 11. I'd like to say I'm thrilled to have made it this far, but there really was nothing to it, honestly, just an e-mail to Simon who hosts the podcast. If you haven't herd the Podcast yet please go and have a listen, it's well worth investigating. Pretty soon myself and 5 real poets will battle it out in a public vote type thing via the Slam Idol website. Even as you read this, I'm getting into shape and I expect you to do the same, at least with your finger that is, in readiness to leap forth, clicking frantically as you vote and rate not only my poem but the others in the contest. For that is how it works. I will let you know when you can vote. In the meantime go listen to Slam Idol....

Hi, I am currently in Moscow on Holiday. The weather isn't as cold as we anticpicated, only minus 25!!! But the thermals are doing the job nicely. We have spent the majority of our first week visiting different local government buildings trying to register me, it is necessary when you come to moscow as a visitor.
Drinking plenty of Vodka and Beer, and intend to reply to all messages concerning the podcast when i return. Will also bring some photos back of the visit. Thanks for listening and programme 12 should be on line on Saturday evening at some point. Cheers and Dasvedanya
